Search Queries

eBay has a search query limit of 350 characters. Additionally, the maximum length for a single "word" is 98 characters and the minimum length is 2.

What eBay sees as a word is not obvious and many searchers have been affected by this change. They treat any run of characters that doesn't contain a space as a word, and the commonly-used comma-separated word lists are treated as a single word if there are no spaces present. So for example (thanks to Elmar D.) there are problems with this query:

nintendo (egg,ball,ballon,baloon,flagman,helmet,judge,juggler,lion,manhole,vermin,bombs,circus,mickey,popeye,snoopy)
-(watch,super,rock,dragon,country,snes,ds,nes,classics,64,figure,boy,gameboy,doll,mini,card,land,tshirt)

eBay will ignore the two comma-separated word lists because there are no spaces and they each exceed the 98-character limit. eBay will fail silently and you'll get an unexpectedly large number of results.

To deal with this in the example above, two spaces can be inserted, one in each word list, to break up each of the word lists so that no single run of non-space characters exceeds the 98-character limit.
